im such a fucking dirty hippy it disgusts me...
well, its been a week or so since i posted to this thing that im sure no one reads now. even amy, my one lone fan has abandoned her neato blog thing.
well, i will troop on.
(for those of you who have never been to a hippy show, skip the rest of this, you wont understand anything)
i was at Widespread Panic this weekend up at Red Rocks. the shows were great, which i wasn't necisarilly expecting, but definately welcomed. i went up and sold food with my dog on the second night since i didnt have a ticket. me and kelly wrapped burritos for about three hours before the show, in total about 35 bucks worth of supplies.
made it up to the parking lot around 3 and started selling food like a madman. in total about 160 someodd dollars from three hours of half-assed walking around/drinking imported beer while selling to the people that were too scared to buy from the dirty hippies.
see, panic shows are funny outside. it has its draw of your stereotypical 'secret stoner' souther frat-boy due to their origins in the south. because of this, and the fact that they released an amazing live album recorded at red rocks (not to mention red rocks just kicks ass, for those of you who have never been, come out) makes it a hot ticket. well, these are the type of kids that start bar fights with "dudes" for lookin at their "chick" wrong in their regulaer setting of[insert popular frat bar name of southern college town]. but in this setting they get a bit freaked out, and tend to stick together in groups tailgating on the back of their tahoes and suburbans.
This is balanced out by your usual hippy dippies.
of course there are the highschool age stoners, happy to get away from mom and dad for an entire day and night and spend their lawn-mowing money on paper thin lot t-shirts, bunk acid and beer, sweet sweet underage purchased beer. this usually leads to one or two of their group vomiting up all over the stair railing on the north side of the ampitheater down into the gulley where the rush of stale beer water comes pouring from all the vendors up top at the end of the show.
the fratboy fans (FBFs) will interact with the highschool age stoners, but usually in some mocking way, ridiculing their tye dyes or hippy tendancies.
then you have the typical colorado music loving hippies. these people love just bieng out and enjoying the show, usually in their chacos and wardrobe purchased exclusively at REI or EMS (including me with my EMS raincoat). They hang out behind their car, turning down vendors slanging beers, molly, mushrooms, headies, goo balls, t shirts, free fruit (hopefully not laced with anything, but they seemed like a nice couple...), glass pipes, sage, free hugs, ticket scalpers, ticket seekers, water sellers, you name it because they came prepared. nothing like seeing a show in your own backyard.
the FBFs get along with these types alright. as long as politics is not brought up. but again, anyone without a side swooping haircut (thats a bit hard to explain, think donald trump) or a [insert white cap with southern college] cap on is definately not one of their own.
As i walked around selling burritos, dipping into the vendor world for an afternoon, i saw all different kinds of people in different degrees of bieng what one could consider the tour rats. These are the people that the FBFs avoid because, i think, the crazy liberal hippies scare and entice them and they are worried they might not look cool for their friends hanging with them. of course they will talk to the tour rat/vendors, and usually in a polite, but dismissing, manner. oh, no thanks brah, were all set here, maybe after the show...
the vendors are usually cool people, some are pretty dirty sketchy people. i wondered about a few of the guys i saw, like, where do they go when there isn't a band worth following on tour? most looked like the guy i give a cheeseburger to out in front of Metro on Colfax every once in a while. Selling items from legit to very non legit. these peole make their way following the band (or in the case of some, many bands) around the country. some do it strictly for profit, some do it to earn money for the next show. i was doing a bit of both. I had decided that i wasnt going into the show, i had disco with me and i wasnt going to leave her in the car, but i was going to the next night and had gone the night before, yet i live here... oh well, i fed the masses.
Then you have your serious tour rats. you have the ones that are selling things for cash, and looking for a ticket while doing so. mostly guys, grubby skate shoes or worn out, chunky, full-foot sandalls from tj max. They mostly hang out in the upper part of the lots, where everyone else has to filter thru to get to the venue on the hill above asking for kick-downs of everything from cigarettes to tickets to hits of x and everything in between. It doesn't matter what band is touring or playing, these people are there because its the heady thing to do, brah. I'm not bashing dreadlocks, i think they rock and know plenty of kids with dreadies. but these are the ones that give people with dreadlocks the easy tag of 'burnt out stoners'. covered in a red dusty film from sunburned head to dirty cut up toes. someone told me they were the wookie mafia, going from some east coast show to bonaroo to wakarusa to panic red rocks to high sierra music fest in cali, but again that was from one of the less sketchy rats, so i took it for what it was worth.
basically, everyone avoids these people at some point. either the super sketchy dudes doing and offering blow next to your girlfriends Envoy, or the guy with a head full of acid talking about some drug deal he did to get his free dose while trying to talk your buddy down on an already cheap 2 dollar fat tire.
what is this all about? I dont know, just some observations from the concert this weekend, im sure ill make sense of this later. or, i guess i don't have to. i went to two kickass concerts fifteen minutes from my house at the greatest ampitheater in the world and came away with money in my pocket. i dont need a point to this story.
